Protect the Protectors

January 19, 2011

The local newspaper in our community has just reported that the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) training center in our area is laying of 44 individuals. The layoff is the result of a Texas state budget shortfall.

The mission of the agency is to “prepare emergency responders and community officials for catastrophic events, including natural disasters, man-made accidents and terrorist attacks.”

Since its creation in 1998, TEEX has trained 278,000 men and women to serve and protect our nation and its people when tornadoes and floods devastate our communities or terrorists (domestic and foreign) threaten our families.

TEEX  serves a tremendous purpose as it prepares and equips men and women for critical service at times of dire emergency.

I think our state has committed an injustice against those 44 laid off public servants. Why did we not do more to protect our protectors and their families from a faltering and failing state economy?
